Metallica’s drummer Lars Ulrich has contributed an introduction to Deep Purple’s Glenn Hughes autobiography. Legendary singer and bassist of Deep Purple autobiography will be released in 2010 and was co-written with Joel McIver.

In the introduction, Lars Ulrich tells of the massive influence which Deep Purple had on his life and his decision to become a musician. As you probably know, Lars first saw Glenn play in Copenhagen, Denmark in December 1973. Lars was 9 years old, and the gig had a massive influence on him.

Here are a few quotes from what Lars writes:

Deep Purple has played a huge role in my life. I saw Purple twice with Glenn Hughes. When I saw Glenn up on stage in that white satin suit, with that Fender Precision bass, and the fuckin’ mane of hair, he looked like a rock god! He had that aura. I was just ‘Oh my God… this guy is so cool!’

At that point, pretty much anything Purple did was godlike. …Glenn had become a major, major player in what was going on.

I first met Glenn in 1996 when Metallica were playing at the NEC in Birmingham. … It was really cool to have him and Tony there at the same time. It was exciting. I got my picture taken with them!

See more details here.

Metallica warmed up for the next leg of the World Magnetic tour with a concert in their backyard. Metallica played for the very first time in their home town of San Rafael, CA, just north of San Francisco.

Metallica’s Marin County debut at the Marin Veterans Memorial Auditorium was an appearance as part of a fundraiser for the Marin Museum of History’s Marin Rocks exhibition slated to open in 2010. The Marin Rocks museum is set to open summer 2010 in downtown San Rafael, and will include exhibits celebrating Marin’s rock music heritage, performance spaces and educational programs for young people in music and the arts.

Metallica’s James Hetfield has lived in Marin since the mid-’80s. He bought a 500-acre spread in San Rafael, he lives there with his wife, Francesca, and three children, Cali, Castor and Marcella, ages 11, 9 and 7.

James Hetfield lives a quiet, low-key life in Marin County, and is always content to stay under the radar. But as the museum plans hit financial trouble, James Hetfield came to the rescue and offered to hold a Metallica concert with proceeds going to the museum. Tickets for the 2,000 seat Marin Veterans Memorial Auditorium venue went between $100 and $350 and sold out in ten minutes.

“We’ve never done a public show. I don’t know why. Probably because there aren’t that many places to play in Marin that are large enough to satisfy enough people,” James Hetfield said to the Independent Journal. “But in the last few years, basically after ‘St. Anger’, we started getting more into public service, giving back to the community, discovering how good that feels.”

“Growing up struggling in a dysfunctional family and being able to turn to music as my escape and therapy and savior is dear to my heart,” James Hetfield of Metallica said. “So introducing kids to music and having a safe clean place for the youth of Marin to come in and jam, talk about their problems and write songs together really excites me.”

“It’s very easy in Marin. Most of the people who stop me are very polite, saying things like, ‘Hey, James, what’s up?’ That’s pretty much it. The people who get star struck or clingy are tourists, and they associate their trip to Marin with me. Everyone else sees me as a resident of this county. It’s very easy to kick back and be an equal.”

Moonalice, featuring Marin musicians Pete Sears and Barry Sless, opened the show. Metallica came out a little after 9:30 p.m., James Hetfield thanked the crowd, saying: “We appreciate you coming out to support the ancestry and the history of music in Marin County.”

The setlist of Metallica’s show:

Creeping Death
For Whom the Bell Tolls
Fuel
Harvester of Sorrow

On September 7th, Ovation TV will broadcast the American debut of the British sensation, ‘Later… with Jools Holland’. What better way to introduce this incredible, name-making musical series than with Metallica!

Metallica originally performed in the show on November 2008 as a promotion for the latest album Death Magnetic. Metallica played Cyanide, Enter Sandman and The Day That Never Comes. It is a rerun of this episode that Ovation TV will show on September 7th.

Jools Holland knows music and now Ovation TV can share all the latest and greatest with US viewers. Labor Day kicks off with a “Later…with Jools Holland” marathon and marks the beginning of new partnership. Ovation TV will be showcasing the latest episodes of this music series every night at 7pm ET/10pm PT with premieres and highlights on several Thursdays.

Dave Mustaine of Megadeth is out promoting his new album Endgame with an interview in Classic Rock. As usual, since he was fired from Metallica in 1983, Metallica is the topic of many of his interviews.

How did it feel to be No.1 in Joel McIver’s recent book, The 100 Greatest Metal Guitarists?

It was especially sweet when I found out that Joel has written books on Metallica. I looked at my copy of the book – I wasn’t on the cover or the back. I figured I’d be somewhere like No.69. So I thumbed through it; it’s a really comprehensive, good book. I got to No.50 and I thought, ‘Am I in here?’ I’d been told that I was, but not which position. So I got No.16 and I saw Hetfield. I thought, ‘Wow’ because I respect James. I’m a better lead player than he is, but he’s one of the three best rhythm players in the world.

The other two being?

Malcolm Young [of AC/DC] and myself. Malcolm kept it basic but brought a whole new style of rhythm playing to the world. So I got to the Top 10… I still wasn’t in there. Every page I turned, I became more excited. I get to No.5 and it’s Kirk [Hammett], and I thought, ‘Thank you, God’.

At that point it didn’t matter [which position I was]. To be better than both of them [Hetfield and Hammett] meant so much – it’s been one of the pet peeves of my career and I’ve never known how to deal with it. I didn’t realise that it has had so much bearing upon my life. Then I got to No.2 and it was John Petrucci [of Dream Theater] and I froze. I was No.1.

What made it better still is that the guy wrote: ‘This isn’t about Dave as a person because he’s been a cock’ – [interjects with a bray of laughter] – ‘These four pages are about his guitar playing, which is the best. There are people who are better at one thing that Mustaine does, and others that are better than another, but no-one who’s as good at everything’. All I thought was… I win!

In a way did it represent closure?

That’s it exactly. I’m not addicted [to anything] anymore. And I’m no longer struggling with past demons from another band [Metallica]. That game has ended. Lars [Ulrich] called me up and offered the chance to come to the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame thing and not be inducted, to sit in the audience [instead].

‘It’s only for people who’ve been on the records’ is what I was told. That would have been awkward. So I didn’t go. There are obviously some unresolved issues on Lars’ part. But you know what? If God wants me in the Hall Of Fame, I will be there.

Very interesting thing happened at the second Metallica concert in Madrid, Spain in Palacio De Deportes on 14th of July 2009. After the intro tape and all the bombs for Metallica’s song One, James Hetfield came on stage and started playing Fade To Black instead. He went on and the guys ended up playing full version of Fade To Black and not One.

Joeytpg from The Metallica Club was at the show and he reports:

“At the end of the song he said “Surprised? Even I was” so he just fucked it up and knowing James, he went with it.

It’s funny because as you know Kirk’s intro solo in One is clean guitar, and Fade To Black is distorted, so you could hear the first couple of notes in clean then Justin (Kirk’s tech) stepped on the Overdrive. I guess they weren’t sure if James would stop.

Also funny that Rob had to change bass quickly and then Lars came in to sit on the drums with his head down as in “Jesus man, what an epic FUCK UP!” hehehe I could almost hear him thinking about it.

Metallica’s Lars Ulrich has already started a joke. On the following show, at Hallendtadion in Zurich, Switzerland, Lars wrote One (Not Fade To Black) on the setlist. This is the setlist thanks to MetOnTour:

This is the video of the whole incident:
