“The Quietus” had an early review of the new Metallica album Death Magnetic. Here is the Metallica’s Death Magnetic review:
I attended the playback of Metallica’s new album at the HQ of Universal, their UK record company, on 3 June. We were permitted to hear six of the 10 tracks which will ultimately appear on the album – which, a rep from the Q-Prime management company informed us, is referred to colloquially by Metallica as ‘Nine epics and one song’. The sense of occasion was reinforced by the presence of almost the entire editorial teams of the UK’s two biggest metal magazines, glaring at each other over the tea urn.
Right from the off, it’s a relief to hear that the utterly awful production of St. Anger is no more. Ulrich has replaced the old dustbin lid from that album with an actual snare drum, and the sound is fresh, clean and resonant (even though the songs are still only rough mixes at this stage). The first song, like the rest of the ‘epics’, is between six and eight minutes long and begins with a bass intro from low-ender extraordinaire Robert Trujillo. Moving rapidly from riff to riff, the song bursts with energy and ideas: singer and rhythm guitarist James Hetfield barks “Luck runs out!” repeatedly and throws in some twisty, semi-progressive riffs which could have been lifted directly from, their last truly good album, 1988’s …And Justice For All. Guitarist Kirk Hammett, who was banned from soloing on St. Anguish for no adequately explored reason, is on fire, whipping out the melodic, rapid-fire shreds for which he is famous over an extended solo section – almost as if he’s making up for lost time. This is Metallica’s best song in ages, perhaps since the 1980s.
The next song has a working title of ‘Flamingo’ and is going to be the first single. Now, Metallica’s lead singles have been breathtakingly crap since 1995, so it was a relief to hear that ‘Flamingo’ (as it almost definitely will not be called) is a modernised take on their amazing 1988 song One, all balladry at its front end before a speeded-up metalstorm at the back. Hetfield delivers a clean-picked intro which reminded me of the Beach Boys (I know… but I only got to hear it once, all right?) before the body of the song, which is basically like ‘The Unforgiven’ from 1991’s ‘Black Album’. If you’re familiar with the chord progression behind the solo in ‘Am I Evil?’, the ancient Diamond Head song which Metallica made their own, you’ll be able to picture the under-solo riffage in this song – all simple, effective major-interval jumps.
However, let us not forget that this is modern Metallica – and the next two songs are much less fun. The first, which may be called ‘We Die Hard’ judging by the frequency with which Hetfield barks the phrase, starts boringly but accelerates halfway through and enters slightly proggy territory, all stop-start riff stabs and a clever time signature. The next song is very . . . And Justice . . ., a lengthy, unhurried workout which revolves around the line “Bow down / Sell your soul to me / I will set you free”, itself a 1988 line if I ever heard one. Apart from dexterous soloing from Hammett, it’s not great.
So far, we’ve had two good songs and two dull ones – not a bad track record for new ’Tallica, believe me. However, track five is tedious, a combination of the aimless riffery of St. Anger and the pointless rock chorusing of Load, the album which almost finished Metallica in 1996. “Crying, weeping, shedding strife!” sings Hetfield in that slick ‘Enter Sandman’ manner, over an unthreatening clean midsection which would (and no doubt will) suit VH1 down to the ground.
At this point the Q-Prime geezer asks us if we want to hear more, and fortunately we say yes – because the final song (and indeed, it is ‘The Song’, the little guy among the nine epics) is great, a genuine slice of thrash metal that starts fast and stays that way. Like a slower, less precise ‘Battery’ (the opening track of 1986’s flawless Master Of Puppets album), the song nips in and out, not outstaying its welcome and proving that on some level, Metallica still have the necessary vitriol to impress their older fans. OK, it reminded me a bit of ‘Dyer’s Eve’, the last song on Justice, which had a kind of “I suppose we’d better do a fast one for the fans” feel about it – but in 2008, Hetfield and Ulrich delivering any form of thrash metal is not to be sneered at.
We file out of the listening room, not saying much. This album could be good, or it could be mediocre – too much depends on the other four songs to make a call at this point. I try not to agonise about it, but this matters, damn it. It really does. I said it wasn’t easy being a Metallica fan in 2008, didn’t I?

That is refreshing to hear. I am glad that much of the new material is remniscent of the “…And Justice for All” era. That is one of my favroite of their albums.
They better come back to normal…I had to throw St. Anger out of my truck window after the first three tracks.
i bet you didnt actually throw it out of your window
My friend works at Warner Brothers and he has heard the first single off the album, the one that the reviewer above refers to as “Flamingo”, and the “Death Is Not the End” song. He liked the single, and said that it sounded much more old school than anything since 1991. Apparently it will please fans of older material. He was disappointed with the “Death” song and stated that it sounded like a St. Anger cast off with better drums. Unfortunately that was all he listened to, but he told me he’s cautiously optimistic.
informative review. interesting information, and i agree with some of the writer’s opinions on the band. though i have come to view metallica with contempt and disgust ( and i am a fan! ), i still cannot wait for the new album to be released. by the way, st. anger isn’t a terrible album. listen to it again, and ignore the production and drum sound. “dirty window,” “frantic,” “purify,” “all within my hands.” load and re-load deserve all the disdain.
I still feel Metallica is the greatest band on Earth. Only for what they accompished in the 80′s and early 90′s. Anything from Load and after is questionable. That’s not to say any of it was bad, it just wasn’t the Metallica I knew and loved. I think they felt they had to go in some new direction for some reason. From the way it sounds, maybe they’re getting back on the right track.
after justice… i think i lost some faith even though black was good… but by then i knew they had commercialized the band.. load, reload, st anger never made it to my cd player.
but if the review is true and i’ve heard a demo of one of the songs… the future looks bright!
they’ve even used back the old MetallicA letterheads… waiting for another creeping death!
The demos they heard were not finished and it might not even make it on the album, remember they made a lot more songs to choose from. I know Death Magnetic will kick some major ass!! I also think the single will be Unforgiven 3.
I was a fan of all of the metallica albums….even load and reload….but tht is enetirely mine and your own opinions. But, they disappointed me compared to the other stuff….especially st. anger, which wasnt a horrible album. This new album is going to blow our minds though. I heard demos of 4 of the 10 songs and they are amazing!!!!!!! Metallica is back on track, and hopefully, before they retire (if ever), they will stay on track.
Wow that review was so biased I am forced to not believe a word of it. Hearing Mission Metallica stuff makes me hopeful but I’m one of the idiots apparently who loves all the albums, not just the first four. If this is a Metallica album then I know it’ll be good.
Well, we hope this album kick ass just like ONLY the first four did! ONLY THE FIRST FOUR! The rest is crap (imho). We wanna hear enough effort once more! Furious riffs, fast drums and great solos again. I guess everyone here hates the “commercial stuff” around not only metallica, but the whole musical scene nowadays! And above all, attitude to assume metallica plays rock and that they do it for the fans and for themselves. You don’t need anymore money men, just play what you know and it’s gonna be fair! ENOUGH CRAP! TRUE ROCK FOR THE MASSES, EVERYWHERE!
This reviewer seems snobby in his review.
I don’t even think I believe the person’s review of the “Death” song. anybody can claim their uncle heard it.
I have been a Metallica fan from the start! As others have said, only the first four albums are great! The others are all pure crap! (Sad But True…) I thank you James for kicking Dave Mustaine out of the band so we were able to get the great band Megadeth! If Death Magnetic is going to be some weak effort somewhere between the Black Album and the “abortion” known as St. Anger; Please, don’t release it and save some face and the little pride your band has left. But if you can put the Metal Up My Ass again, then back it on. I will be holding my breath, but will not be buying until I am proven wrong.
i agree that the first albums are great but how can you knock metallica’s black album… it is probably about 90% of the reason the band is still around… and by the way megadeth is truly garbage and kirk hammett is 10x the guitarist dave mustaine is. the album should be fine and if you never listened to load, reload etc… you need to shut the hell up, half of you claim those albums were shit and also claim to not listen to anything after “justice”. (never heard the album = shut the fuck up, your opinion doesnt matter). and this writer seems biased and determined to prove that no great music will ever com after 1988… and really needs to go fuck off!
Ok let me clear it up for all of you. The first four albums were works of art. the black album was an awesome album, but paled in comparison to the first four albums. everything after has sucked and will always suck. thankyou and goodnight.
I agree fully with Dan! Rob as far as Megadeth being garbage, I really think you need to sit back and listen to some of their albums. Rust in Peace or System has Failed would be a good start. As far as who is a better guitarist, I think even Kirk Hammett would disagree with your statement. There has been great music after 1988, just not by Metallica. Trust me I would love for them to come out with another “Master of Puppets” but they are stuck in this “blues” music thyme and that just isn’t metal.
i think metallica back in the 80s & 90s just kicked ass but everything after reload sucks big donkey dick st. anger was nothing but a big pile of shit and i think megadeth kicks ass but every thing after rust in peace & the world needs a hero & united abominations suck both bands got way to flashy with some of there albums so i hope death magnetic is not another st. anger throw up & i hope thay go back to there old style like for example kill em all or ride the lightning.
you people don’t now shit about whats good metallica.you praise the early albums.and call black and everything after it crap. thats bullshit!all the records had good songs bad songs and great songs.killem had horseman, seek, and evil the rest were either good songs or worse.ride the lighting had bells and fade the other songs were good but not great.masters is the exception every song kicks ass.and justice has blackened, one, harvester, dyers eve and eye of the beholder are the great songs. the rest are just descent, the black album the great songs are many.sandman, unforgiven, matters, sad but true, misery, god that failed, and roam.now lets talk about load if you knock load down to 8 songs you got a great album.bitch, jack, sleeps, king, hero, bleeding, mamma, and one of metallicas best songs outlaw torn.reload has remains,fuel,unforgiven2,devils dance, fixxer all great songs
and garage inc. i love this album if you dont like this album your not a metallica fan.stone cold crazy is enough to buy this album.from side one ther are 6 songs that will fucking kick your ass.and side 2 the stuff from garage days and b sides is fucking awsome.s&m no leave clover is one of metallicas best tunes.st.anger is there worst album.but frantic, unamed feeling and all within my hands will melt your fucking faces off!
Shannon you are 100% right, finaly a comment that makes sens.
Shannon how can you claim “you people don’t know shit about what’s good Metallica” When you only name off two songs on “Ride The Lightning”, but you name off practically the whole Load album?! LOL, LOL, LOL. Like first off, you are fuckin’ retarded and your opinion is borderline mentally challenged. Secondly, “Ride The Lightning” is just as good as “Master Of Puppets”, you are telling me “Creeping Death”, “Ride The Lightning” and “Fight Fire With Fire” aren’t great Metallica songs?! What about “The Call Of Ktulu”?! Every song on Ride The Lightning is by far better than anything that was released on Load, or Reload, and well St. Anger… Put together for that matter.
As for whoever was dropping that Kirk Hammett is a better guitarist than Dave Mustaine. They obviously have never listened to a Megadeth album in their life. Don’t you get sick of Kirk Hammett using a “cry baby” on every solo?? lol
Anyways in the end Metallica and Megadeth have both gone downhill, and no matter how good Metallicas new album is… There are still a good handful of better metal bands out there doing their thing, not selling out, and making better music than Metallica has done in their entire career. Try picking up a Nevermore album and open your eyes to real music.
Ok you fucking back stabing bitches enough. This isnt about what song is better,( and anybody who says the black album sux is a fucking retard, that was them at there peak, they paved the way for all the little bands that we listen to now, JAMES GAVE UP HIS VOICE AND MIND ON THE BLACK TOUR thats why they went down hill the fire wasnt there anymore, burned out.) Every single song from that band till load was epic. Load was great because it created a new way to hear metallica, I personaly like the change it was needed at that time, cuz people dont wanna just think about death all the time. Re Load is the first album of them I bought and I liked it cuz it was cool in that era. Now Garage days was great, no leaf clover great. St. Anger BAD! Its what u get when u(James) have to re hab and raise a family and let ur band write lyrics and this never talked about piece of shit who did wreck Metallica in the last years named bob rock produces ur songs and says everything sounds great, lars new it sucked but it had to be made to keep them going. Personally some of them songs could have been good if edited properly and coached write, but James didnt make that cd enough said. Now to all u lil bitches who r in doubht, go to you tube and type cyanide, and u can hear the future of metal coming of james pic cuz that song kicks major fucking ass, and I am sure that the other 9 will to. Now lets c here we r saying metallica sux since black album but why, could it be they were burned out from that epic tour, james voice n mind gone, bad producer, and oh yea age, they are fucking old u bastards , and they just re invented whats going to be cool, with this new album, Cyanide break this empty shell no more.
haha, this guy cried like a baby over CYANIDE saying its aimless riffage of St Anger and the Chorus of Load and Reload. This guy is very selfish and narrow-minded in his review. waaaaaaah, lets get him a pacifire!!!
As for the Sandman reference, i don’t hear it REVIEWER!!! I don’t know how they hire snobs in this field.
The guy who reviewed this album never gets laid like all those metallica bashers.
okay first and foremost i have to say that with the exception of “St. Anger” & “Re-Load), i LOVE every Metallica album! i personally think that “Load” was a great album that showed Metallica’s diversity. if you guys wanna complain about Metallica “selling out” you can start complaining when they made the video for “One” which is universally agreed as one of their finest songs. after that they made “The Black Album” which totally slowed down and was so far from any of their previous 4 albums that a first-time listener (such as myself when the album came out) could tell that they were even the same band! as i heard Lars once say (paraphrased), “if you want us to continually write songs like the “Master of Puppets” album, listen to Slayer…i couldn’t agree more! my favorite album is “Kill ‘Em All” but if they made 9 albums like that one i would get burned out and move on to other music. i’ve heard the first single off of “Death Magnetic” and it completely kicks ass! i counted so many parts in the song that pulled from previous songs (Fade to Black, One, The Unforgiven 2, The Outlaw Torn) that it takes me through the 20+ history of Metallica. i can’t wait for the album to drop. METAL UP YOUR ASS!!!!!!
Wow it’s great to hear people even discuss Metallica with such passion, after recent years of garbage that’s been put out, it just shows me the imprint that have left on metal. I will always have room in my Cd player for all the albums prior to the Load album. I don’t believe Metallica knows how to make a good heavy metal album anymore and until they can prove me wrong, I will have to look elsewhere for my metal fix.
Metallica is the greatest band ever. I personally disregard re-load and saint anger (black and load are both good). the original four albums are so masterful that they make up for whatever percieved crap theyve made since. cant wait for this album, and to see them live.
I will only say this once….Dont ANY of you so called “metallica fans” DARE call yourself “Metallica fans” unless you embrace CHANGE AND DIVERSITY on EVERY SINGLE FUCKING ALBUM THEY HAVE DONE !!!!!!!!!!! black album/ Load / Reload / st. Anger ..EVERY SINGLE ONE A MASTERPEICE !!!!. unless you like EVERY SINGLE ALBUM …YOUR NO FUCKING METALLICA FAN …
nuff said….
Metallica sucks since 1996 with the Load Album
Thats all
I must say that for the first time I’m really suspicious about a new Metallica album. I’ve heard The Day That Never Comes, Cyanide and the small parts on their website. It seems a mix between Metallica / Iron Maiden / Mercyful Fate …. until now I don’t find really inventive …
I thought that inspite of everything, especially the drums, St. Anger had some different aspects into it.
I’m a massive metallica fan, seen em live a few times, own all the albums (obviously) but i have to say that blindly loving everything a band writes smacks a bit of not thinking for yourself (chaosmagnetic) there are songs i love (Puppets, battery, frayed ends and many more) however i found st anger completely lacking in inspiration an with nothing to say and i even (whisper it…) dont like every track on lightning an am not a fan of welcome home. Isn’t it weird having your own opinion an thinkin for yourself??!) A band shouldnt write just for the sake of writing, thats when you end up with the mediocre stuff. You are a metallica fan when you spend yer hard earned cash on their music, you are a metallica fan when you pay good money to see em live (an they always serve your moneys worth back to you) an you have the right to judge the cd you purchase. you dont have the right to judge people because they dont like certain things i.e albums. Change an diversity is good though. An dare i say it i enjoy the 4/5 song on re-load an think bleeding me is one of their standout tracks. all am sayin is enjoy what YOU do an let others enjoy what THEY do. tolerance. is. wonderful.
